Dogs and Cats Forever, Inc. – Animal Shelter Spotlight
This month, I’d like to spotlight Dogs and Cats Forever, Inc., which was organized in 1988 for the purpose of building and maintaining a shelter for homeless dogs and cats of the Treasure Coast.
As with all dedicated shelters, this shelter is committed to finding good, adoptable and loving homes for their animals.
I am many things.
To name a few, I am a children’s author and animal rescue advocate.
I am a shelter pet owner, and I am a Guardian Angel.
Does that last part sound irreverent?
Not really.
The Guardian Angel program at Dogs and Cats Forever permits individuals, groups and businesses to prepay the adoption fee of one (or more) of the cats or kittens up for adoption.
I have been donating money to the Guardian Angel program for several years.
I usually ask that my contribution goes to older cats so that they can live out their lives in a forever home.
That’s just my preference.
Any cat, no matter the age, would love a permanent home.
Paid adoption fees help homeless cats find their new family.
Cats that have had their adoption fees paid for will have a Guardian Angel sticker with their name on the door to their room, and in their profile on the Dogs and Cats Forever website.
This shelter has several other programs.
Their Fospice Program allows geriatric shelter pets, and chronically or terminally ill pets to be cared for in a home setting.
These pets do not know that their time is limited, but, when adopted, they are happy every day that they are with you in your loving home.
You might consider selecting an animal from the Dogs and Cats Forever Fospice Program.
This short-term commitment will enhance the life of a deserving animal, and enhance your life, too.
The shelter will provide medication, medical supplies, prescription food, if necessary, and arrange and pay for vet visits.
Sweet Seniors is another program at the shelter.
The title of the program says it all.
To quote the older animals, “They call us senior pets, that just means we have years of experience in the fine art of friendship.”
Spoiler alert: My latest shelter cat, Jasmine, came from the Sweet Seniors program.
And she is sweet!

Fostering is another way to help homeless animals.
I won’t go into fostering in this post but will save it for another post dedicated to fostering.
