Humane Society of the Treasure Coast – Bunfest 2023
The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) was founded in 1955.
HSTC has joined leading shelters around the state and country as a model organization for lifesaving culture change in its community.
The mission of HSTC is to provide compassionate care and nurture the bond between people and pets.
Over the years more than 350,000 animals have received care through HSTC’s programs and services.
HSTC accepts all animals regardless of health, age, temperament, or breed.
This includes rabbits.
Yes, rabbits.
So, let’s talk rabbits for a minute.
These complex animals are often purchased on a whim, especially in the spring.
Many times, potential owners rarely understand the specific needs of their new companion pets.
Rabbits are popular pets.
They are intelligent creatures.
They are fun and may even cuddle with you.
Rabbits can even learn to use a litter box.
However, they are not starter pets for kids.
Easter is just around the corner.
April 9, 2023, to be exact.
Many bunnies are surrendered to shelters because of impulsive and uneducated rabbit adoption.
Handing them over to a shelter is hard on the animal who had bonded with their adopted family.

Cabbage, Smokey and Bandit were HSTC animal shelter bunnies.
Smokey and Bandit were a bonded pair.
Fortunately for all three, they were recently adopted! They are the lucky ones.
After cats and dogs, rabbits are the third most popular house pet, and the third highest shelter intake of companion animals.
Owner surrender is the most common reason for a rabbit entering a shelter, followed by strays.
Rabbits can bring joy to your life but please don’t be tempted to give your child an adorable Easter bunny without completely doing your homework.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Having a Rabbit
- Rabbits are docile and easy to live with.
- Rabbits can be trained to use a litter box.
- Rabbits can be cuddly if approached in the right way.
- Rabbits don’t belong outside.
- Rabbits are not low maintenance.
- Rabbits can be destructive and disorderly.
- Rabbits are not friends with dogs and cats.
If you are looking for a rabbit to adopt and have done your research, please visit your local animal shelter or rescue group.
Even though Cabbage, Smokey, and Bandit have recently been adopted, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast has other rabbits at their shelter looking for a forever home.
