Rabbits & Raindrops – Book Review
Reviewed by Sherry Dunn
Let’s talk about rabbits.
Rabbits are also known as bunnies or bunny rabbits.
Around Easter each year, I let my readers know how important it is to research bunnies before giving one to your child as a pet.
They require specific care which may be different than a cat or dog.
Children love bunnies.
Why not give them a great children’s book which has a great story but is also a teaching moment?
Rabbits & Raindrops is such a book.
Jim Arnosky is the author and illustrator.
He is also a well-known naturalist.
Jim has written and illustrated many highly successful books for young readers.
The age group for Rabbits & Raindrops is 3-7 years old.
The watercolor illustrations throughout the book are incredible and beautiful.
The text is simple.
Children experiencing nature for the first time will fall in love with this book.
Did you know? A bunny’s big ears aren’t just for listening! Their ears also help regulate the rabbit’s body temperature.
The book opens with a mother rabbit sitting by her nest with five baby bunnies.
The nest is under a hedge at the edge of a green lawn.
The baby bunnies are ready to explore life outside their nest for the first time.
The reader sees beautifully illustrated butterflies, birds, spiders, and lizards, to name a few creatures.
The bunnies are taking in all of nature while their mother looks on.
Suddenly, the sky turns dark.
Big, heavy raindrops begin to fall.
Mother rabbit hurries her babies back under the hedge.
Why?
Did you know? A baby rabbit is called a “kitten.”
While back under the hedge, other creatures of nature come to visit the rabbits.
When the rain stops, the rabbits hop back out to the lawn to explore and have more adventures.
Young children will love this book.
It is presented with a few basic facts that are simple and clear.
Children will not only learn about rabbits but are also introduced to other animals in nature.
The book is 8.58 x 0.13 x 10.66 inches, soft cover with 32 pages; great for preschool – 2nd grade.
There are many two-page spreads with large, colorful, simple illustrations.
Rabbits & Raindrops is a great book to read as a child’s bedtime story.
Because of the large illustrations, a classroom setting, or a library full of kids would also be perfect.
Rabbits & Raindrops is another children’s picture book I would highly recommend.
Children will not be disappointed.
They will have fun reading about the bunnies.
Think about this.
Rabbits & Raindrops would make a wonderful Easter gift for children instead of a real bunny rabbit.
Just a thought!

One more Did You Know? You should never relocate a rabbit if you find one outside. A rabbit has a short life and spends most of it within the same 10-acre area. Relocating a rabbit will confuse it and potentially cause it to get hit by cars or be killed by predators.
