Scruffy – a Rescue Pet Story
Hello!! My Name is Scruffy
I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I was born in Rowan County in North Carolina. My litter mates and I were picked up off the streets by Animal Control in Salisbury, NC. I was given the name Scotch. We were then separated to different adoption agencies so I don’t know what became of my siblings. I was fortunate to go to a very kind gentleman named Tony Montieth on June 11, 2018. He owned the Cedar Farm, Inc. adoption facility in Mocksville, NC. Mr. Tony posted an ad on the internet for my adoption which my mommy and daddy happened to see. They filled out some paperwork and made an appointment to visit Cedar Farm. On Friday, August 10, 2018, they came to check me out and decided I was the one they wanted to adopt.
They started the 70 mile trip from their house in West Jefferson to Mocksville. On the way they stopped to eat dinner since our meeting was scheduled for 7:00 PM. While they were eating, Mr. Tony called them and told them they had to bring my future sister with them to meet me. So, they had to drive 20 miles back up a mountain to get Wendy. Along the way they stopped to buy a kennel for me to sleep in. Daddy went into the store to buy my kennel and mommy stayed in the car with Wendy. She is a Miniature Schnauzer who just wanted to play with the toys at Mr. Tony’s facility. She really didn’t have very much to do with me that evening. We sniffed each other as dogs do but we didn’t play very much together.
My daddy has always had large dogs, so mommy was very surprised that he had chosen me since I weighed less than 11 pounds. Over the years he has had a Great Dane, several Doberman Pinchers, a German Shepherd and a Standard Poodle. I am still small in size weighing only about 16 pounds which is perfect for being a lap dog.
Mommy and Daddy were all set to take me home with them that day, but Mr. Tony wanted to deliver me to their home in the mountains. (He wanted to check out where I would be living.) That turned out to be a good thing since daddy had accidently bought a pink kennel. They had to take it back to the store and exchange it for a nice shiny black one. (I would have looked strange in a pink kennel since I’m a boy!!!) So, on Wednesday, August 15th, Mr. Tony and I went for the long ride up the mountain to my new home. Mr. Tony fell in love with my new house and was very happy to let me stay there.
The first thing mommy and daddy did was to give me a new name. I’m so glad they did because I didn’t like the name Scotch either. They picked the name Scruffy because according to the Urban Dictionary it is slang for an unusually attractive male, with slight facial hair. Fits me to a tee!! I also have a natural Mohawk on the top of my head. Everybody I meet thinks I’m the cutest puppy ever.
I really like my new home. I had to learn how to go up and down stairs. When we go out for walks there are so many
things for me to smell since we practically live in the woods. We have lots of rabbits, deer, wild turkeys, squirrels, chipmunks and birds. When the temperature is warm enough, mommy opens the front door and I can look out at all the wildlife. Plus, the people across the road have 3 big dogs that I love to watch run around in their yard.
Sometime in late October, we all got in the car and went for a very, very long ride. It took us two days with a stop in a motel. Come to find out, we have a second home in Jensen Beach, Florida. This home is so very different from our country home. We are in a neighborhood with lots of other homes. A good number of the people here have a dog or two so I have made many friends. There are no stairs here so everything is on one floor. Here too, we have a place at the front door to look out if it is not too warm.
It does get rather hot here at times!!! On those very warm days, we go on shorter walks, but most days we walk about a mile in the morning, a half mile at noon and sometimes another mile in the late afternoon. There are not as many wild smells here, just other dogs and a few rabbits. Once in a while, a Sandhill Crane will flap its wings at me to let me know who is boss.
My favorite place is in my daddy’s lap. Sometimes I even share his lap with Wendy. However, most of the time she is with mommy. When daddy is
working on the computer, I will sometimes sit on his lap at the desk. I do have another place I like to go and that is under the bed. When something scares me like fireworks, I feel safe there.
Mommy likes to call me butt-in-sky. When she gets down on the floor to play with Wendy, I love to butt in for attention also. When she stops petting me I have to paw her as a reminder I still want more attention.
Mommy and Daddy were talking about our summer home, so I guess we will have to make that two long day’s trip in April. I’m such a good little traveler. Most of the time I just lay in the back seat and don’t make a sound. Wendy on the other hand, has to sit on mommy’s lap so she doesn’t get car sick. When we get back to North Carolina I love to share the bed with Wendy in front of the fireplace, especially if it is cool.
My mommy and daddy take very good care of me and I don’t cause them any trouble. I hardly ever bark. In fact, I bark more in my sleep than when I am awake. I am a very laid
back, calm baby which is perfect for my parents who are getting up in years. This is a picture of daddy and mommy (Byron and Jeanne Larsen). I am so very happy to be a part of their lives.
